I haven’t seen the New Muppets movie yet but its debut triggers memories of the old Muppets show on TV. I can remember several nights eating popcorn & watching the Muppets. Remember Jiffy Pop popped on the stove? You would stand there moving the foil pan back and forth until at last it would pop and create a giant foil bubble of delicious corn goodness.
I loved the Muppets. I didn’t really have a favorite character, but the two old guys Statler & Waldorf stood out. They were two geriatric hecklers sitting in the balcony in the Muppet Theater. They managed to give all of the muppets a hard time at one time or another. Most of the time these two would make rude comments about the show like:
Waldorf: You know, the opening is catchy.
Statler: So is smallpox.
Or
Statler: Wake up you old fool. You slept through the show.
Waldorf: Who’s a fool? You watched it!
The job for these characters was simple. Make fun of, mock and heckle the show for some added laughs.
Some of us have hecklers in our head. Like two little Statler & Waldorfs yelling insults or doubts or personal slams in our frontal cortex. Every time we make a mistake; heckle. Every time we blow it; insult. Every time we try to do something different; doubt.
Slatler: Hey look, he just lost his temper!
Waldorf: Oh well, I guess he find it again tomorrow!
Both: Aaahaahahahaha…
Waldorf: She really doesn’t know how to keep her mouth shut!
Slatler: She should learn. It would match her closed mind!
Both: Aaahaahahahaha…
The hecklers in our head don’t want us to succeed. The hecklers in our head can’t imagine victory over an area of our lives where they’ve only seen defeat. The hecklers cause fear, doubt, guilt. Just when we think we’re doing our best, when the show is going great and we’re giving it our all, the hecklers in our head fire off zingers like “Not good enough.” or “You’re a fake.” or “It won’t last.”
But the hecklers in our head aren’t the only voice out there in the theater of life. Thankfully Statler & Waldorf don’t get the last word. Isn’t it time to kick the hecklers out your head? The best way to open the trap door under them is to ignore them and listen to the right voice. There’s another One sitting in the balcony. He’s different. He speaks words that add incredible value and from the opening curtain of your life to the closing bow, He’s pulling for you and giving you a standing ovation.
Romans 8:31-34
What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us.

“…from the opening curtain of your life to the closing bow, He’s pulling for you and giving you a standing ovation.” So beautifully put.
Your words here and elsewhere express a loving gentleness that reminds me of how Jesus ministered to the woman caught in adultery, and to Thomas in the upper room and Peter on the lakeside after the resurrection. Bless you in your ministry and in your writing.
